A transposon mutagenesis screen identified that insertions in p0020 (ECO_0005509) abolished the ability of phage P5_14 red variants to infect V5red Vibrio crassostreae strains, indicating p0020 is essential for overcoming Dnd-mediated host defence. A targeted gene deletion of p0020 (ECO_0001038) confirmed this result, as the mutant phage lost infectivity. Reintroduction of p0020 into a blue phage background restored infectivity on hosts with Dnd defence, demonstrating p0020 is necessary and sufficient for anti-Dnd activity (ECO_0000017).
